The Vuokkoset Bio range is completely carbon neutral! We consider environmental values throughout the entire production chain, from the selection of raw materials to product disposal, for all of our products.
We choose raw materials suppliers that also take responsibility for the environment. We choose the most environmentally friendly materials possible for our products. We favour the use of certified organic cotton in our products, and continuously develop our products to be environmentally friendlier. Recycling is important to us, and that’s why all of our products are packed either in plant-based plastic, polythene, or cardboard, and all are perfect for recycling or combustion.
We turn all of our production waste into energy through combustion, so no waste ends up in landfill from our production. Our production facilities only use certified eco-friendly electricity produced with hydropower. Hydropower is a renewable form of energy that does not generate any carbon dioxide emissions at all.
Vuokkoset products do not contain lotions or fragrances.
All Vuokkoset thin pads and pantyliners are manufactured at our factory in Veikkola. Organic tampons are responsibly manufactured by our European partners.
Skin-friendliness and use
All Vuokkoset products bear the Finnish Allergy, Skin and Asthma Federation’s Allergy Label, which indicates skin-friendliness. The products do not contain fragrances, bleaching agents, or other substances which commonly cause irritation or sensitivity.
All feedback that we receive is extremely important to us. You can give feedback using the Contact us form, which you can find here.
Certificates
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is the world’s first international forest certification system to promote environmentally conscious and responsible forest management. The FSC certificate awarded to Muumi Baby diapers is one of our investments into sustainable development, social responsibility and responsible forest management.
The primary raw material in all Vuokkoset products is FSC-certified cellulose from FSC-certified Finnish forests. Finnish forestry does not use chemical herbicides, such as glyphosate, against brushwood, so the cellulose used in our diapers is safe for your baby. This means that in accordance with responsible forest management principles, new trees are planted in place of felled trees. By choosing Muumi Baby diapers, you are helping to protect the natural diversity in northern Forests. Read more about FSC on FSC’s website.
The criteria for the Nordic Swan Ecolabel are drawn up from a product life cycle perspective, from the selection of raw materials to the product’s disposal. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel signifies a product’s environmental responsibility, accounting for the production process, the product’s use and waste management. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel sets precise and stringent criteria on what Vuokkoset products may contain and what may be added to them during the production process. Products that carry the Nordic Swan Ecolabel may not contain any substances harmful to health or the environment. The materials used in Vuokkoset products must also be manufactured with low emissions and without burdening the environment. Products with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel may not contain any unnecessary added chemicals, such as lotions or fragrances. Learn more about the Nordic Swan Ecolabel’s criteria here.
The Key Flag Symbol indicates that a product has been manufactured in Finland and supports Finnish employment. The Key Flag Symbol is a registered collective trademark providing reliable proof of the product’s domesticity. Vuokkoset is the only Finnish manufacturer of menstrual hygiene products, which it manufactures in Tammisaari, Western Finland. By choosing to buy Finnish, you are supporting Finnish employment and minimizing emissions from e.g. transport. Buying Finnish is a responsible choice. Learn more about other products with the Key Flag Symbol here.
The Finnish Allergy, Skin and Asthma Federation awards the Allergy Label to period products that are independently studied and safe. The Allergy Label guarantees that the products are safe and that they meet stringent, product-specific criteria. Period products with the Allergy Label may not contain any fragrances, scents or other substances that could irritate or sensitize the skin. Muumi Baby diapers are marked with the Allergy Label and are suitable for even the most sensitive skin.
Environmental friendliness
Biodegradable Vuokkoset Bio products can be disposed of in your home compost or as mixed waste after use. Other Vuokkoset products can be disposed of as mixed waste. The packaging bags for pads can be recycled as plastic waste and pantyliner boxes can be recycled as cardboard.

Vuokkoset Bio products are completely biodegradable, but biowaste sorting varies from municipality to municipality in Finland. Previously, some biowaste stations have rejected hygiene products due to the human waste – menstrual blood – they contain. Please follow the local instruction of the disposing biowaste. Sorting varies from municipality to municipality, which is why we have advised you to dispose of Vuokkoset Bio products either in your home compost, or as mixed waste.

All Vuokkoset Bio pads, their individual wrappers, and pantyliners are biodegradable. The pantyliners’ cardboard packaging is also biodegradable.
The bag that the pads come in is made from Green PE, which is not biodegradable. Green PE is a bio-based renewable plastic manufactured from sugar cane, and it is recycled as plastic.
The pantyliners’ cardboard packaging is biodegradable. It can be recycled as cardboard.
The bag for Vuokkoset Bio pads is made from Green PE. Green PE is not biodegradable, but it is an extremely environmentally responsible and durable alternative for the bag. The durability of the bag is an important requirement for us to be able to offer our Vuokkoset Bio products to consumers in the warmer countries we export to, where a biodegradable bag would unfortunately break down too quickly.
Green PE is made from a bio-based, renewable raw material. It is marked on the packaging with an “I’m green” symbol. Green PE is made from sugar cane, which binds carbon dioxide in the air and thereby helps in the fight against global warming. The sugar cane used to manufacture our bags is grown over 2000km away in the Amazon rainforests. Green PE can be recycled as plastic.
The pads’ packaging is Green PE, which can be recycled just like regular plastic. The pantyliners’ cardboard boxes are biodegradable, but they can also be recycled as cardboard.
The pads’ individual packaging film is biodegradable, and that’s why the film can be disposed in your home compost, biowaste or mixed waste. The silicone paper (on which the Vuokkoset logo is printed) in pantyliners and pads can be placed in the home compost, biowaste or mixed waste.
The raw materials used in Vuokkoset Bio products, cotton, cellulose, and the backing film, are all biodegradable, but we do not have a certificate of biodegradability.
It is not possible to give a precise length of time, as biodegrading time varies so greatly depending on circumstances: moisture, temperature, how the product is placed in the compost, etc. Cotton breaks down slowly, even though the material comes directly from nature. A cotton t-shirt, for example, will not compost in a short period of time.
The used cotton comes from several sources, but always meets the stringent requirements of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The cotton is organically grown and sourced mostly from small producers. No chemicals to support intensive production are used to grow the cotton. All fertilisers used must meet very stringent environmental criteria.
The cellulose comes from the Finnish Rauma pulp mill and is primarily sourced from Finland’s forests, though sometimes from other Nordic countries.
None of our products are bleached with chlorine. Chlorine bleaching produces dioxins, which are known carcinogens, as by-products. The cotton is bleached using hydrogen peroxide and the cellulose is bleached with oxygen.
Cellulose is sourced in Nordic forests, which means lower emissions from transport. Cotton cannot be grown in Nordic and that’s why it must be transported long distance. In addition, cotton production requires lots of water, which burdens the environment. We only use cotton in parts of the product where it is useful – in the surface layer, which is in contact with the skin. The absorption layer of the product is cellulose.
Yes, they do – the product’s backing film is made from bioplastic. The plastics used in Vuokkoset Bio products are certified biodegradable/compostable plastics. Bioplastic contains both a renewable natural material and a fossil-based material. The product does not contain any excess plastic.
The individual packaging film on the pads is known as a bio film, which is certified biodegradable.
The backing plastic on pads and pantyliners is a starch-based film that is certified biodegradable (EN13432 certified biopolymer).
Thin layers of two different glues are used to manufacture the Bio products. One is a sticker glue, and one is a structural glue. Both types of glue are food-grade resin-based hot melt adhesives and they are used in the products in such small quantities that they do not affect the products’ biodegradability.
The V label is an internationally used and registered symbol denoting that a product or service is vegan or vegetarian. The V label is an easy and reliable shopping aid for consumers. Vuokkoset Bio products are vegan and have been awarded the V label. The certificate’s stringent criteria mean that the product does not contain any animal-based materials and that the production process does not involve any animals or materials of animal origin.
Without a certificate, it is impossible to say whether all of a product’s materials are fully vegan.
